When it is needed
Emergency contraception can reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or when regular contraception has failed, for example a missed pill or a split condom. It is a safe, sensible option and nothing to feel awkward about.
Why timing counts
The sooner it is taken, the better it tends to work, so it is worth acting quickly rather than waiting. Because we are open late into the evening, we can often help at the times other services have closed.
There is no lecture and no awkwardness here. It is a short, private, confidential conversation so we can give you the option that suits you best. And sooner is better, so please do not put off asking.
How the consultation works
You ask at the counter and we take you into a private room. The pharmacist asks a few confidential questions to work out which option is most suitable for you, provides it, and gives clear advice on what to expect. Under the HSE scheme it is provided free of charge.
Thinking ahead
If you would like, we can also talk through regular contraception options and the free contraception scheme, so you feel more in control next time. No pressure, just information whenever you want it.
