Colds, Coughs and Sore Throats: What Helps, and When to Seek Help

What actually helps

Most colds and coughs are caused by viruses and settle on their own within a week or two. The things that truly help are simple: rest, plenty of fluids, and treating the symptoms that are bothering you most so you can get through the day.

Sensible use of remedies

There is a wall of products in every pharmacy, and it is easy to buy more than you need. Tell us your main symptoms and we will point you to one or two things that will genuinely help, and check they are safe alongside anything else you take.

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches and fever, taken as directed
  • Warm fluids and honey for a scratchy throat
  • Steam or saline for a blocked nose
  • Rest, which is underrated and free
Antibiotics do nothing for the ordinary cold, which is a virus. What genuinely helps is rest, fluids, and treating the symptoms so you feel more comfortable while your body clears it. We can guide you to the right thing.

Looking after a sick child

Children pick up bugs constantly, and most pass without drama. Keep them comfortable, hydrated and rested, and use only child-appropriate doses. If you are ever unsure, ask us; we would far rather you checked.

Red flags worth acting on

Some symptoms deserve a closer look: breathing difficulty, a very high or persistent fever, a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, or a child who is drowsy, struggling to breathe or not taking fluids. If in doubt, come and talk to us or contact your GP.
