Understanding the Cost of Your Medication

Medical Card (GMS)

If you hold a medical card, your prescription medicines are covered under the General Medical Services scheme. You pay only the standard prescription charge per item, which is capped each month, rather than the full cost of the medicine.

The Drug Payment Scheme

If you do not have a medical card, the Drug Payment Scheme puts a ceiling on what you or your family pay for approved medicines each month. Once you reach the monthly limit, you pay nothing further that month, no matter how much medication you need. Registering is simple and we can help.

A surprising number of people pay more than they need to, simply because no one sat down and explained what they qualify for. That conversation is free, and it can make a real difference every month.

Long-Term Illness Scheme

If you have one of the qualifying long-term conditions, the Long-Term Illness Scheme covers the medicines and certain appliances you need to treat that condition, free of charge, regardless of your income. It is well worth checking whether your condition is on the list.

Not sure where you fit?

The schemes can overlap and the rules take a moment to explain. Bring us your prescription and we will work out what applies to you, make sure every entitlement is used, and tell you clearly what you will pay before we dispense anything.
