Suitability

Is Wegovy right for you?

Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine for weight management. A prescriber decides whether it suits you, and our pharmacists carry out their own checks before dispensing.

Often suitable if…

You are an adult with a BMI of 30 or more

Your BMI is 27 or more and you have a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea

You are ready to combine it with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity

You would value pharmacist support and regular reviews along the way

Speak to us first if…

You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding

You have had pancreatitis, gallbladder problems or a thyroid condition

You have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2

You take insulin or other diabetes medicines, or have a serious digestive condition

This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. Only a prescriber can confirm whether Wegovy is suitable for you, and we are always happy to talk it through first.

What Wegovy can do

Reduces appetite

Semaglutide works on appetite centres in the brain, so you feel full sooner and think about food less.

Meaningful weight loss

In clinical studies, alongside diet and activity, many people lost around 15% of their body weight over roughly a year.

Just once a week

A single small injection under the skin on the same day each week, from a simple pre-filled pen.

Supervised in Tallaght

Dispensed and reviewed by our pharmacists, with real check-ins and evening collection right up to 9pm.

How it works

How Wegovy works

Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it mimics a natural gut hormone that helps regulate appetite.

Suppresses appetite

Reduces hunger so it's easier to control how much you eat.

Slows gastric emptying

Keeps you feeling fuller for longer after meals.

Supports weight loss

Combined with diet and activity, drives meaningful, sustained results.

What to expect

What results can you expect?

Weight-loss medicines work best as part of a plan, not on their own. Here is a realistic picture from the evidence, remembering that everyone responds differently.

~15%

Average body-weight reduction

Seen in clinical trials over about 68 weeks, alongside diet and activity.

1 / week

A single weekly injection

Stepped up gradually over 16 to 20 weeks to your maintenance dose.

4–6 wks

Before you notice changes

Appetite often shifts early; steady weight loss builds over the following months.

These figures are averages from clinical studies and are not a promise of results. Your outcome depends on your starting point, your dose and the diet and activity changes you make alongside treatment. Wegovy is intended for long-term use under review.

Injecting Wegovy: the essentials

Wegovy comes as a pre-filled pen you use once a week. Our pharmacist will show you in person, this is a quick refresher.

Pick your day and site

Inject on the same day each week into the tummy, thigh or upper arm, and rotate the exact spot every time.

Prepare the pen

Take it from the fridge, check the liquid is clear and colourless, and attach a fresh needle for each dose.

Give the injection

Pinch the skin, insert at 90 degrees and hold until the dose finishes. It takes only a few seconds.

Dispose safely

Put used pens and needles straight into a sharps bin, ask us about getting one.

If you miss a dose

If it is within 5 days, take it as soon as you remember. If longer, skip it and take the next on your usual day, never double up.

Store it right

Keep unopened pens in the fridge. Once in use, follow the leaflet on room-temperature storage and use-by times.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wegovy available in Ireland?

Yes. It's licensed for weight management and we can dispense it for you in Tallaght once you have a valid prescription.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

In clinical trials people lost around 15% of their body weight on average over about a year, alongside diet and activity. Individual results vary, some lose more and some less.

What's the dosing schedule?

You start at 0.25 mg once weekly and step up roughly every four weeks, through 0.5, 1 and 1.7 mg, to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. Going slowly helps limit side effects.

How do I take it?

It's a once-weekly injection under the skin of your tummy, thigh or upper arm, using a simple pre-filled pen. We'll show you exactly how.

Will the side effects settle?

For most people nausea and digestive effects are strongest early on and ease as the body adjusts and the dose steps up slowly. Tell us if they are hard to manage.

Is Ozempic the same as Wegovy?

Both contain semaglutide, but Wegovy is licensed for weight loss in Ireland and reaches higher doses. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes.

Do I need to stay on it long term?

Wegovy is intended for long-term use. Weight often returns if it is stopped, so we review your progress with you rather than stopping abruptly.

Is it covered by the medical card or DPS?

No, Wegovy is currently not covered by the medical card or the Drugs Payment Scheme, so it is a private purchase.

Can I get my prescription sent to you?

Yes. Ask your GP or online doctor to send it by Healthmail to Pharmacy Hub, Tallaght, and we will take it from there. Call us if they need our address.
